Wow!! What a muck up that MyBB developers did on the login thing!

You are absolutely correct in your thread in responding to Wires about the Diff stuff.

Ok... for the time being... I am forcing ALL users who come to my website to use Luxor Forums - Carbon theme because that theme is more or less a direct copy of the original default except for the colorizations and icon changes.

I am so pissed at MyBB developers for missing the boat on this! That should have NEVER happened in the first place!

Someone did not bother to properly run the upgraded website with a heavily modified theme like NetPen or BootBB to see what problems would popup... but... no they didn't bother to do that.

Had someone did... the problems would have been fixed before the release. Sighs...

The bigger themes are no more of a issue them smaller themes.

It's just harder to find differenes them you may need to recode some things if you have different ways that code is implemented.

Also MyBB should have more testing there have been a few bugs introduced this version as well as the bugs the last few versions with YouTube, moderation logs etc.

I know stuff happens and there will be things that slip through, though so we can't get annoyed at it or them.

As for themes, plugins etc it's not up to MyBB to ensure code compatibility with stuff.

I'm all for MyBB to have code breaking fixes if it means better security and codebase.
I'm not a maintain compatibility guy.
However code and other changes need to be publicly documented and highlighted so people know without being surprised.

As you stated in your reply to Wires at MyBB, admins like myself would be up in arms over these kinds of things and cause some to re-think about continuing to use MyBB as their forum software.
That's my main concern.

You mentioned MyBB taking on Xenforo and other major forum software, well, this isn't looking good for MyBB at the moment. Just saying...

Granted, if a new admin was starting up a brand new install of MyBB 1.8.16, they wouldn't have this issue, but... if they were to use a custom theme... well... they are "up the creek" as they say around here.

I have already contacted the author of the NetPen themes (he customized my website theme)... hopefully, he will find a way to fix this issue ASAP.

If things don't change nothing improves.

For MyBB to go forward it needs to change and that breaks stuff holding it back.

It's just how things are, sure it would have been nice to wait until 1.9 for theme breaking stuff but I imagine the security of that hidden field was probably needed now to avoid a exploit that could start hitting forums.

If that wasn't fixed and your or other forums were hit they're would be a outcry that MyBB isn't doing enough in security to avoid these things happening.

If its not a crutial fix, it could have probably waited to 1.9 to be rolled out which will require new themes as is.

The thing is though these types of changes are needed in all software even xenforo etc has these occasionally.

It's also one reason why one should never overload their forums with loads of themes and plugins etc which would hinder updating when there are major changes.

As I have mentioned before all admins should have some experience with web and server stuff.
Administrators are responsible for ruining and administrating the forum and servers they are run on as well they are responsible for maintaining a environment for all communications from every user.
That included being in charge and responsible for fixing bugs and maintaining running services.

If someone wants to run a forum but not administrate it, they need to reassess why they want to run a forum in the first place of they don't have the skills to maintain it.
Especially if the person has no interest in learning, wanting to or isn't capable of learning web and administrative skills.

Forums take a lot of work to maintain and keep ruining compared to social media and other types of groups which has taken over for the casual group and social collective.

As you have seen a lot of links users have on the MyBB fittings are now dead because smaller forums are no longer viable in a always connected social media age.

Only those forums with a bigger dedicated end goal which is above social media and a dedicated team will survive.

For me I want to broaden my server and web skills as well as creating a community that one day may be a mega forum.
It's my way of learning more administrative and back end stuff as well as using my own issues and passions top try to help and support others.

I've been involved in computers in some way since 1991. That's 27 years worth experience in dealing with computer hardware and building a ton of computer systems.

However, not once did I ever wanted to learn in-depth coding. I can do basic HTML, but beyond that, I have no desire to learn higher level of coding.

I do understand *some* stuff in regards to CSS, but to create a brand new CSS is something that I have no knowledge of doing.
Same goes for PHP coding, I don't get it at all. It's just one of those things that I cannot rationalize it.

However, talk to me about computer hardware, I can talk your ear off and some of the stuff that I tell you may go over your head.

My point? Not everyone wants to learn coding, but many love to run websites and forums like I do. We all have different reasons for doing this. I do it for fun and interaction with the users that come into my website. I don't make money from it. I have never made a penny, but that's OK.
I may sell my website next year for different reasons, but whatever my asking price is, it will not allow me to recover any costs that I have put into my website and that's OK, too.

Granted, there was a learning curve to understand the AdminCP side of it, but once I got it, it was fine until some CSS and/or PHP issue came up. Also, that learning curve included understanding how the databases interact with the forum software. I understand a few things about it, but I have no interest in learning SQL. It's not in the cards for me.

I will say this... compared to what I know about running a forum based website from about 19 months ago, which was literally zillch, to now is night and day.

I am very disappointed that the MyBB developers have closed your thread and another related thread regarding the Login issues. It seems that the quorum among the developers is that everyone should have understood the Diff stuff and figured it out from there. That's a bad way of handing this. I was going to reply to Eldenroot in both of those threads, but both are closed. Sighs...

My 2nd Admin has found that the Inline Moderation issue has popped up again since the upgrade. Dang...

Completely understand stuff though everyone should remember that if you are running a web focused platform you need to be able to manage web stuff or partner with someone who can do that side.

Similar examples is someone likes food from around the world may not be qualified to start a restaurant.

I don't have much coding experience also and have issues and won't really learn with it, but I'm willing to learn the little I can with how to fix stuff and modify the basics in order to do what I can here.

I also want to have a property web coder here in the team to help implement and grow the site and community.
I can manage the back end server etc, but I need someone to complete the package.

It's not just about coding though but more administration skills and being able to tweak stuff required for this type of stuff.

As for the thread being locked I understand they didn't want to start a flame war.

As it is that change it was not in the release notes that they kept referring back to.
As I pointed out the change that was in the notes was not related and a lower priority about lockout signatures.

Good business is highlighting the critical changes.

I know core template changes happen and I'm not talking about that, as I'm completely fine with that happening especially as changes can improve things for the future, also comparing diffs if you don't have a backup copy of the default which doesn't get updated is hard which gives me a idea to create a second copy of the MyBB theme for this exact purpose.

However what I do have a issue with is the lack off documentation of core changes and QA in this and recent versions.

Good business is to document everything.
Especially if you do a minor but major functionality code change which will affect most users, you need to let them know.

Especially on a forum with custom code you need to tell the users that codebase has changed and a new or improved method of doing something it's now required,.

Minor changes like a styling fix or something which isn't breaking don't need to be documented as much as something as something which affects and changes the functionality and ways a process is handled.
Which in this case happened here.

A change which affects the way logins work on every theme and a change in template is required, should have been highlighted in the change log telling people to update that area of their themes.

Yes I read the change log before updating to see specifically if anything like that existed in this version, nothing was mentioned that theme logins would break and a minor code change was required.
That is a big oversight.

Other companies / teams handle this better with a documented rundown of stuff and how it affects things and what is developers need to do as mitigation.

Documentation and processes is something that something as big as MyBB should be doing.

I document everything here I don't need to explain myself though as people aren't running or using our code elsewhere.
It's however good practice for me at least to show to end users that the site is changing and things are getting fixed improved as it helps to highlight that this community is continuously working and changing to be better for everyone here, and as a history log.

With that change of it blows up on their forum from lots of users then it would highlight the oversight and they would have to learn from it to do better.
Unfortunately it's the only way done people will learn by when things get highlighted.

I'm thinking of starting a specific discussion over there about QA and improved change logs bit don't want it to be turned into a flame war.
